Guardian Angels
"See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven."
— Matthew 18:10
Today's Story
The feast of Guardian Angels falls on October 2. Jesus' reference to the angels of 'these little ones' is one of the most cited texts for the belief in personal angels assigned to God's people — and particularly to children. Parents who carry deep concern for their children have found comfort in this verse: there is an angelic commission in relation to children, whose angels have direct access ('always see the face') to the Father. The protection of children is not only a human responsibility — it is, this verse implies, a divine concern backed by supernatural provision.
Reflection
Matthew 18:10 comes in the context of Jesus using a child as the model of kingdom citizenship (verse 2-4) and His warning against causing children to stumble (verse 6). The angels of 'these little ones' who always see the Father's face suggest a continuous divine awareness of and concern for the vulnerable — not just children in the literal sense but the 'little ones' in terms of status, power, and position. To despise them is to act against those whose angels are in constant communion with the Father. Every person you encounter who is vulnerable, overlooked, or powerless has a direct line to God's throne through their heavenly representation. Handle them accordingly.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I see the little ones around me — vulnerable, overlooked — and I treat them as those whose angels stand before Your face. Give me eyes to see what the world overlooks and a heart to protect what You protect. Amen.
