Luke the Beloved Physician
October 18
Luke the Beloved Physician
"Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings."
— Colossians 4:14
Today's Story
The feast of Luke the Evangelist is October 18. Paul calls him 'the beloved physician' — a man who served both as a healer of bodies and, through his writings, a healer of souls. The Gospel of Luke is the most comprehensive in its attention to the poor, women, Samaritans, and the marginalized — the people a physician would encounter on the margins. Luke traveled with Paul through dangerous seas, remained with him in imprisonment, and wrote two of the New Testament's most theologically rich works. He models the integration of professional skill and gospel service: a doctor who was also an evangelist, a writer who was also a caregiver.
Reflection
Luke's identity as a physician shapes his Gospel and Acts in subtle ways: the attention to physical healing, the detailed descriptions of disease, the compassion for those who suffer bodily. His Gospel records more healing narratives per chapter than any other. He understood bodies as sites of God's compassion and medical care as an expression of divine concern for human wellbeing. The integration Luke models — professional excellence in service of the gospel — is a model for every believer who has technical skill and gospel faith. Your professional expertise and your faith in Christ are not separate. The physician who is also a saint, the accountant who is also a missionary, the teacher who is also a disciple — this is Luke's pattern.
Today's Prayer
Lord, help me integrate everything I am in Your service — my skills, my training, my professional capacity — all offered to You. Like Luke, let my vocation be part of my calling. Amen.
