Trusting God's Timing

When Jesus Delayed

"So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days."

— John 11:6

📖

Today's Story

The death of Lazarus is the most theologically dense miracle in John's Gospel. And it begins with a stunning verse: Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, loved the family — and stayed where He was for two more days. The man He loved, in a family He loved, was allowed to die while Jesus deliberately did not come. From the perspective of Mary and Martha, it was inexplicable. From the perspective of John's narrative, it was intentional: 'for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it' (verse 4). The delay was not abandonment. It was the preparation for something that a healing could not have accomplished.

Reflection

John 11:6 is one of the most honest verses in the New Testament about the experience of divine delay. Jesus loved this family and stayed away for two days after hearing of the crisis. The delay was not indifference — verse 5 establishes love as the context. It was purpose. The resurrection of Lazarus required his death. The glory that would result required the waiting. Whatever prayer you have been waiting on, whatever seemingly unanswered request has become a source of questioning — John 11 is written for you. The One who loves you has heard. The delay is not absence. He is preparing something that your earlier deliverance would have prevented.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Lord, I trust You in the delay. You heard. You love. You are not absent. Whatever You are preparing by making me wait, I trust that it will be more glorious than what I am asking for now. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
