The Communion of Saints

All Saints Day

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."

— Hebrews 12:1

📖

Today's Story

All Saints Day was established in the early church to honor the martyrs and all who had gone before in faith. The cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 12:1 refers specifically to the faith heroes of chapter 11 — Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Samson, David, Samuel. These are not passive spectators in the bleachers; they are witnesses — people whose lives testify to what is possible through faith. On the day the church honors its saints, it receives a specific encouragement: you are not running alone. The ones who ran before you are watching. Run like someone is watching, because they are.

Reflection

The 'cloud of witnesses' is not a cheerleading section divorced from our struggle. It is a testimony cloud — the cumulative evidence of lives that demonstrate what faith can do. Each person in Hebrews 11 had their faith tested in specific ways. Their stories are witnesses to the faithfulness of God in the testing. To run 'surrounded' by these witnesses is to run in the company of people who know what the race costs, what the difficulties feel like, and what the God who sustains it all is truly like. The communion of saints is not just backward-looking sentiment; it is the encouragement of the living by the testimony of those who ran first.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Lord, I run today in the company of the saints who ran before me — surrounded by their witness, encouraged by their testimony. Let me run as one who knows I am not the first and will not be the last. Amen.
