Give Thanks in All Circumstances

Give Thanks in All Circumstances
"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
— 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Today's Story
Ann Voskamp described the practice of counting one thousand gifts — specific thanks, recorded daily — in her book One Thousand Gifts. She began the practice in response to deep grief: 'How can I thank God when everything is wrong?' Her discovery over the months of counting was what she called 'eucharisteo' (thanksgiving): 'The only way to truly live is to give thanks in all circumstances — not for all circumstances, but in them.' She found that naming specific gifts, however small, broke the grip of grief and anxiety in ways that abstract positive thinking could not. The discipline of gratitude changed her neurological and spiritual experience of reality.
Reflection
1 Thessalonians 5:18 is Paul's most comprehensive thanksgiving instruction: 'in all circumstances.' Not for all circumstances — Paul is not asking us to be grateful for tragedy. He is asking for gratitude that exists within whatever circumstances arise. This is not a denial of difficulty; it is the practice of noticing God's provision, goodness, and presence within the difficulty. The phrase 'this is God's will for you' makes thanksgiving not just a nice spiritual practice but the specific will of God for your life. The most clearly stated divine will in the New Testament is not career guidance or relational decisions — it is thankfulness.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I give thanks today — in these circumstances, whatever they are. Not because everything is good, but because You are present in everything. I name three specific gifts right now: [name them]. Thank You. Amen.
