The Kingdom Within

The Kingdom Within
"Nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is in your midst."
— Luke 17:21
Today's Story
The Pharisees asked Jesus when the kingdom would come — expecting, presumably, a political revolution or a dramatic cosmic event. His answer redirected their attention entirely: the kingdom is not something you observe coming from outside; it is among you, within you, already present in the person of the King. A theologian described this as 'inaugurated eschatology': the kingdom has already begun in the arrival of the King, and it is growing inwardly and communally until the day it becomes fully visible. The child who has faith is the kingdom in miniature. The community of believers is the kingdom in seed form.
Reflection
Luke 17:21's phrase 'in your midst' (or 'within you') is deliberately ambiguous — it can mean 'inside you' (inward, spiritual) or 'among you' (communal, present). Both are probably intended. The kingdom of God is not primarily a future political order or a geographical location; it is the present reign of God in surrendered human hearts and in the community of those who acknowledge the King. This means you don't have to wait for the kingdom to arrive before you live under it. It is already among you, available now, operating now, producing its fruit now wherever people submit to the King. Begin there.
Today's Prayer
Lord, let Your kingdom come — in me first, then through me. Let Your reign be real in my surrendered heart today, producing the kingdom's fruit in every interaction. Amen.
