Margaret of Scotland
"But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds."
— James 2:18
Today's Story
Queen Margaret of Scotland, whose feast is November 16, turned her queenship into an extended act of service. She established hostels for pilgrims, ransomed captives, reformed the Scottish church, and made her court a center of Christian learning and hospitality. Contemporary accounts describe her eating with the poor, washing the feet of orphans, personally serving hundreds of the hungry at her table. She did not treat faith as a private sentiment; she treated it as an operational framework for governance. She is patron saint of Scotland — remembered not for battles or conquests but for the integration of faith and justice that characterized every aspect of her rule.
Reflection
James 2:18 poses the decisive challenge to a faith that remains purely theoretical. 'Show me your faith without deeds' — James says this is impossible. Faith, by its nature, expresses itself in action; faith without expression is not faith but assent. The person who believes in the justice of God will practice justice. The person who believes in the generosity of God will practice generosity. The person who believes in the forgiveness of God will practice forgiveness. The deeds are not the cause of salvation; they are the evidence of genuine faith. What does your faith produce that would not exist without it?
Today's Prayer
Lord, let my faith be visible in my deeds. Let the things I believe produce the things I do. Where my deeds do not match my faith, change either my deeds or my faith — until they are one integrated thing. Amen.
