All Things in Christ

"He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

— Colossians 1:17

📖

Today's Story

A nuclear physicist who was also a Christian described his understanding of the verse: 'We know that atoms are mostly empty space, that electrons orbit at distances proportionally as vast as the earth from the sun. What keeps matter from flying apart? Scientists describe fundamental forces — but the question of why those forces exist and why they maintain their ratios is not answerable by physics. Colossians 1:17 is the theological answer to the scientific question: He holds it together.' He described his laboratory as the place where he studied the mechanics of divine coherence. 'I'm describing how He does it,' he said. 'I'm not explaining why it holds. That takes Colossians.'

Reflection

Colossians 1:15-20 is one of the highest Christological passages in the New Testament. Verse 17 makes a cosmic claim: in Christ all things sunesteken — are held together, cohered, maintained in their existence. This is not a metaphor or devotional encouragement. It is an ontological claim: the physical universe maintains its coherence because Christ actively sustains it. Without His sustaining activity, matter would disperse, forces would disintegrate, the cosmos would cease. The One who holds the universe together is the same One who holds your life together. The coherence you experience in your best moments — the sense that things make sense, that life has meaning — is the fruit of His holding.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Jesus, You hold all things together — the cosmos and my life within it. Whatever threatens to fly apart today, You are holding. Let me rest in Your coherence. Amen.
