A Table Before Me

Provision in the Presence of Enemies

A Table Before Me

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows."

— Psalm 23:5

📖

Today's Story

The Pilgrims who celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1621 did so in the presence of their 'enemies' — illness, starvation, a brutal winter, uncertainty about the future. Half their number had died in the first winter. Yet they celebrated. The feast was not a denial of the enemies present; it was the proclamation that God had prepared a table in their presence. The enemies were real. The table was also real. To celebrate at Thanksgiving is not to pretend difficulties don't exist; it is to affirm that God provides in the midst of them.

Reflection

Psalm 23:5 is startling in its imagery: the table is not set in a safe place, away from danger. It is set 'in the presence of my enemies.' The meal happens while the danger continues. The anointing and the overflowing cup are acts of lavish hospitality from the Host while adversity looks on. This is the nature of divine provision: it does not always remove the enemies before providing the feast. It often sets the table in the middle of them. The cup overflowing is a deliberate excess — not just enough but more than enough, visible to the enemies who expected lack. The abundance of divine provision is itself a testimony.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Lord, I receive the table You have prepared — in the presence of my enemies, in the middle of my difficulties. You anoint me and fill my cup until it overflows. I will not wait for a better situation to be grateful. Amen.
