Zephaniah's Song
"The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing."
— Zephaniah 3:17
Today's Story
Zephaniah 3:17 is one of the most startling verses in the Minor Prophets. In the context of judgment and exile, the prophet suddenly describes the LORD rejoicing over His people with singing. Not just tolerating them. Not just forgiving them. Singing over them with joy. A woman who struggled with deep shame described reading this verse for the first time: 'I expected God to be disappointed in me. I did not expect Him to be singing about me. The image completely undid me. I had been relating to the God of my imagination, who was at best patient with me. The God of this verse was delighted. I had never considered that.'
Reflection
Zephaniah 3:17 describes five actions of God toward His redeemed people: He is with you (presence), He saves (action), He delights in you (pleasure), He rests in His love (stability), He rejoices over you with singing (celebration). The singing is perhaps the most startling: God as the One who breaks into song over His beloved. The image is of a parent singing over a sleeping child, a bridegroom singing over a bride. The fear-based religious imagination pictures God as at best tolerant. The revelation of Zephaniah is that God is joyful — genuinely, expressively joyful — over those who belong to Him. Be the occasion for the divine song today.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I receive the startling truth that You rejoice over me with singing. Not disappointed. Not merely patient. Singing. Let this replace the fearful image I've carried and let Your joy over me produce my joy in You. Amen.
