Advent: The Coming King

The Righteous Branch

"The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land."

— Jeremiah 23:5

📖

Today's Story

In the sixth century BC, with the last of David's kings about to go into Babylonian exile, Jeremiah received one of the most specific Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament: a coming King from David's line who would reign with wisdom, justice, and righteousness. The political situation made this seem impossible — the Davidic dynasty was collapsing. But Jeremiah proclaimed it anyway. His prophecy became the framework for subsequent generations' Messianic expectation. A king of justice, of wisdom, of righteousness — the antithesis of the corrupt kings who had led Israel to exile. This King was coming.

Reflection

Jeremiah 23:5-6 describes the coming Messiah with a name that contains a theological program: 'The LORD Our Righteous Savior' (Yahweh Tsidkenu). The name is also the mission statement: a King who brings righteousness — not the righteousness of earned achievement but the righteousness of covenant faithfulness, of justice enacted, of right relationship restored. In Advent we anticipate both His first coming (when He bore our unrighteousness in Himself) and His second (when He establishes the righteous reign in full). The King who came in Bethlehem is the same King who will come in glory. The righteous Branch has already been raised. He is already reigning. His reign will be fully revealed.

Today's Prayer

LORD Our Righteous Savior — You have come. You are coming. Your reign of wisdom and justice and righteousness has begun. Let it advance through me today, in every just and wise and right action I take. Amen.
