The Hinge of History

The Hinge of History
"In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son."
— Hebrews 1:1-2
Today's Story
The birth of Jesus divides human history into two halves — before and after — so completely that the entire planet's calendar system is organized around it. Every date on every calendar in every country, whether using BC/AD or BCE/CE, acknowledges that something happened at this point significant enough to number all time from. An atheist historian who wrote on this phenomenon noted: 'Whether you believe in the theological claims or not, you must acknowledge that the historical weight of this moment is unique. No other birth, no other death, no other event has reorganized how humanity counts time.'
Reflection
Hebrews 1:1-2 is one of the most elegant summaries of redemptive history in the New Testament. God has spoken — in many ways, through many prophets, over many times. Now, in 'these last days,' the communication has reached its culmination: He has spoken by His Son. The Son is not one more prophet in the line; He is the final, complete, definitive word. All previous revelation was partial; this is complete. All previous revelation was preparatory; this is the fulfillment. The Incarnation is the hinge of all history — the moment when God's self-communication reached its absolute fullness in a human life. You are reading the words of the One through whom all things were made.
Today's Prayer
Lord, You have spoken definitively in Your Son. Let me hear that word afresh this Advent — not as information I already have but as the living word of God addressing me today. Speak, Lord. I am listening. Amen.
