The Wonder of His Love

The Wonder of His Love
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
— John 3:16
Today's Story
John 3:16 has been called the 'gospel in miniature' — the entire Christian message in one sentence. It has been printed on billboards and held at football games and tattooed on arms and whispered by mothers to sleeping children. Billy Graham described it as the first verse he memorized and the last verse he preached: 'I have come back to it ten thousand times and it has not grown old. Every time I read it, it is the first time.' It summarizes what Christmas is: God's love expressed as gift, the Son given, the world the recipient, eternal life the outcome.
Reflection
John 3:16 is the theological center of the Advent season: God so loved — this is the motivation. The world — this is the scope, the whole cosmos, everyone. He gave — this is the action, the self-giving generosity. His one and only Son — this is the value of the gift, the most precious possible. That whoever believes — this is the universality and the condition. Shall not perish but have eternal life — this is the outcome, the replacement of death with life, of temporary with eternal. Five movements in one sentence. The gift of Christmas is not a decoration or a tradition; it is God's most extravagant act of love in all of history. Receive it.
Today's Prayer
Father, thank You for so loving the world — thank You for so loving me — that You gave Your one and only Son. I believe. I receive the gift. I will not perish but have eternal life. Amen.
