Today's Reading

Psalms, Chapter 23

📖 Read Chapter

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

— Psalm 23:4

The psalm does not say 'if you walk through the darkest valley' — it says 'even though.' Grief is part of the route, not a detour from it. David does not promise the valley will be short or shallow. He promises it is not permanent and not traveled alone. The shepherd metaphor is deliberate: shepherds do not abandon their sheep in the valley to wait at the top. They go down into it. God's presence in grief is not a distant management of your pain from somewhere comfortable. It is a descent into the dark place with you, rod and staff in hand. The rod drives off predators; the staff guides and steadies. Even here, you are not left to find your own way out. You are being led. The valley has an other side. You are walking through it, not into it permanently.

Today's Prayer

Good Shepherd, walk with me through this valley. I cannot see the other side. I trust that You can. Hold me today. Amen.
