Does the Bible require homeschooling?

Some Christians argue passionately that homeschooling is the only faithful option for raising children, citing biblical parental responsibility as proof. Others just as passionately defend public or Christian schooling as equally faithful. Before entering that debate, it helps to ask a more basic question, does the Bible actually require homeschooling as an institution. It does not, and recognizing this clearly can lower the temperature on a debate that often generates more heat among believers than the biblical text itself warrants, since Scripture addresses the responsibility to teach children, not the specific institutional structure through which that teaching must happen.

The foundational passage on this subject is Deuteronomy 6:6-7, these words that I command you today shall be on your heart, you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Notice what this commands, ongoing, woven-into-daily-life instruction in God's Word and ways. It commands ongoing spiritual formation, not a particular schooling method. A family could fulfill this command while their children attend public school, private school, or are homeschooled, since the command concerns the content and constancy of teaching, not the classroom setting.

Ephesians 6:4 reinforces this same parental responsibility for the New Testament church, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Again, the emphasis falls on parents as the ones ultimately responsible for their children's spiritual formation, regardless of where academic education happens. This is a crucial and often overlooked point in the homeschooling debate, the biblical command to disciple children belongs to parents in every case, it is never transferred entirely to a school, whether public, private, or Christian, nor is it uniquely fulfilled only through homeschooling.

Because Scripture commands the substance of discipleship rather than a specific delivery method, decisions about where children receive their academic education fall into the category of wisdom, not command. Just as Scripture gives principles about stewardship without specifying a particular budgeting method, it gives principles about discipling children without specifying a particular school structure. Families are free to apply the unchanging command of Deuteronomy 6 and Ephesians 6 differently depending on their circumstances, convictions, children's needs, and local context, without one family's choice being more obedient to Scripture than another's simply based on the schooling model chosen.

Advocates of mandatory homeschooling sometimes argue that public education inevitably undermines Deuteronomy 6 by placing children under largely secular instruction for the bulk of their waking hours. This is a serious pastoral concern worth weighing carefully, and it may lead some families to conclude homeschooling or Christian schooling is wisest for them. But the argument proves too much if pressed into a universal command, since it would also implicate any Christian family whose children have significant time under non-Christian influence in any setting, extracurriculars, friendships, media, workplaces later in life, none of which Scripture treats as automatically disqualifying if parents remain faithfully engaged in discipleship at home.

It is also worth remembering that generations of faithful believers were discipled well without any organized schooling debate at all, since formal schooling as we know it is itself a relatively recent development in most of church history. Timothy was raised in the faith through his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois (2 Timothy 1:5), not through any particular institution, which is a helpful reminder that the decisive factor in a child's spiritual formation has always been faithful parents and grandparents modeling and teaching the faith at home, not the specific school system surrounding that home.

The healthiest posture in this debate is humility and freedom of conscience. Romans 14:5 speaks to disputable matters of this kind, each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. Christian parents should make schooling decisions prayerfully, considering their children's needs, their own capacity, their local schools or homeschool resources, and their sense of calling, always remaining the primary disciplers of their children regardless of the choice made. What Scripture requires is diligent, loving spiritual formation at home, that requirement stands whether a child studies at the kitchen table, a Christian school desk, or a public school classroom.

Christians on every side of this discussion would do well to extend one another more charity than the debate often receives online or in church hallways. A homeschooling family and a public schooling family sitting in the same pew are both capable of raising children who love Jesus deeply, and both are equally capable of failing to disciple their children if Deuteronomy 6 is neglected at home. Judge the fruit of discipleship, not the schooling method, and you will judge far more accurately than the loudest voices on either side of this debate usually do.
