Is there scientific evidence for God?

Science cannot put God under a microscope, weigh him on a scale, or capture him in a photograph, because he is not a physical object within the universe—he is the one who made the universe. So science, by its nature, cannot 'prove' God the way it proves the boiling point of water. But that does not mean science is silent on the question.

Science can, and does, uncover facts about the universe that are far easier to explain if a Creator exists than if one does not. That kind of evidence—pointing beyond itself toward a best explanation—is exactly the sort of case this article makes.

For much of scientific history, many assumed the universe was eternal, requiring no explanation. That changed with Edwin Hubble's discovery of cosmic expansion and later confirmation through the cosmic microwave background radiation—strong evidence that the universe began a finite time ago in what is popularly called the Big Bang. Whatever begins to exist needs a cause, and this cause must exist beyond the space, time, matter, and energy it brought into being.

This lines up remarkably with the very first line of the Bible: 'In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth' (Genesis 1:1)—written millennia before modern cosmology confirmed a cosmic starting point.

Physicists have discovered that the fundamental constants of nature—gravity, the strong and weak nuclear forces, the cosmological constant—are calibrated with extraordinary precision. Small deviations in any of these values would make stars, chemistry, or stable planets impossible. Some scientists describe our universe as sitting on a razor's edge that allows for the existence of life at all.

This precision is exactly what we would expect if a purposeful mind designed the universe to be habitable, and it is far harder to explain through unguided chance alone.

Physicist and Nobel laureate types have described some of these constants using numbers so precise they are difficult to even visualize—comparable to hitting a target the width of a single atom from across the entire observable universe. Whatever explanation one prefers for this precision, the sheer scale of the calibration required makes 'it just happened to work out' an increasingly difficult position to hold with a straight face, scientifically speaking.

At the molecular level, every living cell operates on information encoded in DNA—a genuine language with a four-letter alphabet, translated into proteins through a stunningly precise cellular machine. In every other realm of human experience, complex, functional information arises from an intelligent source: a book, a computer program, an architectural blueprint. Unguided chemical processes have never been observed to generate this kind of specified information from scratch.

The psalmist wrote that he was 'fearfully and wonderfully made' (Psalm 139:14) long before anyone understood genetics, yet the discovery of DNA has only deepened how fitting that ancient praise really is.

Even setting aside debates about how life diversified once it existed, the question of how life began in the first place remains remarkably unresolved by purely naturalistic explanations. Getting from simple chemicals to the first self-replicating, information-bearing cell requires far more than mixing the right ingredients; it requires assembling and coordinating thousands of precisely functioning parts simultaneously, with no natural selection available to guide the process, since selection itself requires life, and reproduction, to already exist.

Decades of origin-of-life research have produced valuable insights into chemistry but no demonstrated pathway from non-life to life through unguided processes alone. This gap is not a matter of ignorance to be dismissed as 'God of the gaps' reasoning; it's a specific, well-defined scientific problem that intelligent causation explains far more naturally than chance chemical reactions do, since every other instance we know of functional, coded information systems traces back to a mind, not a mixture.

Faithful Christians hold a range of views on the age of the earth and the mechanisms of biological change, and this article isn't the place to resolve every detail of that in-house discussion. What matters for this question is that neither an old universe nor evolutionary biology, even if true, removes the need for an ultimate cause of the universe's beginning or an explanation for why physical laws are tuned for life in the first place.

Scientific evidence for a Creator does not require rejecting mainstream cosmology; it points to the deeper questions cosmology itself cannot answer—why there is a universe with these particular laws instead of no universe, or a chaotic one, at all.

Paul says God's 'eternal power and divine nature' have been clearly seen through what he has made (Romans 1:20). The universe's beginning, its fine-tuning, and the information within life are not neutral facts sitting apart from faith; they are signposts, meant to lead observant minds toward worship rather than mere academic curiosity.

It is worth remembering that some of history's most careful scientific minds—men like Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, and Francis Collins, who led the Human Genome Project—saw no conflict between rigorous science and firm faith in a Creator. Kepler famously described his astronomical work as 'thinking God's thoughts after him.' Good science, done honestly, has never required abandoning belief in the God who made the very universe scientists study.

Science, rightly practiced, is not the enemy of faith but one of the tools God has given us to discover just how carefully and intentionally he made the world we live in.
