What is the self-existence (aseity) of God?

Aseity comes from the Latin phrase a se, meaning "from itself," and it refers to one of the most foundational attributes theologians ascribe to God: His self-existence. Every other thing that exists, every star, tree, animal, and person, depends on something outside itself to exist and to keep existing. You depend on your parents for your birth, on air and food for your continued life, and ultimately on God Himself for your very being (Acts 17:28). God alone depends on nothing outside Himself. He simply is, uncaused, underived, and self-sustaining, the only truly independent being in all reality.

This attribute may sound abstract, but it stands behind nearly everything else Scripture teaches about who God is and why He alone is worthy of worship.

The clearest biblical foundation for God's self-existence comes from the burning bush, when Moses asked God what name he should give the Israelites. God answered, "I AM WHO I AM... Say this to the people of Israel: 'I AM has sent me to you'" (Exodus 3:14). This name, from which the covenant name Yahweh derives, is essentially a declaration of self-existent being. God is not defined by comparison to something else; He simply is being itself, the one whose existence depends on no explanation or cause outside Himself. Every other name in Scripture describes God in relation to something, Creator, Redeemer, Shepherd, but this name describes His very existence as underived and absolute.

This name set Israel's God apart from every idol of the ancient world, gods who were born, who could die, who depended on myths of origin involving other gods or forces. The true God simply and eternally is.

Because God alone possesses self-existence, everything else that exists derives its being from Him. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1); before that beginning, only God existed, needing no prior cause or material to bring Himself into being. Paul told the Athenians, "he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything" (Acts 17:25), and even quoted a Greek poet approvingly: "In him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). Colossians describes Christ this way too: "he is before all things, and in him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:17).

This is the classic distinction theologians draw between the Creator and the creation: everything created is contingent, dependent, and derived, while God alone is necessary, independent, and self-existent. Nothing, not time, not matter, not even logic as we experience it, exists prior to or apart from Him.

Jesus described this same reality when speaking of His own divine nature: "For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself" (John 5:26). This phrase, life in himself, is a striking way of describing aseity. God's life is not borrowed, sustained, or given from an outside source; it is intrinsic to who He is. By contrast, human life, even eternal life given to believers, is always received and dependent, a gift from the only truly self-existent source (1 Timothy 6:16, describing God as the one "who alone has immortality").

This is why God alone is described as eternal in the fullest sense, without beginning or end, and unchanging, since anything that could change would imply a dependence on something causing that change, something impossible for a being who is complete and self-sufficient in Himself.

God's aseity is the reason He is the only sure and stable foundation for your life. Everything else you might depend on, health, relationships, resources, achievements, is contingent and can be taken away. But the God who is self-existent, needing nothing and depending on nothing, is utterly reliable and unshakeable, "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). This is also the reason worship is fitting only toward Him. To worship anything dependent and derived, whether wealth, another person, or even yourself, is to build your life on something that cannot ultimately hold the weight.

Knowing that God is self-existent should also deepen your wonder at grace. This infinitely self-sufficient God, who needed nothing and no one, chose freely, out of love, to create you, sustain you, and, at great cost through Christ, to draw you into relationship with Himself (John 1:12-13). That is not necessity; it is grace from the only truly independent being in the universe, freely given to utterly dependent creatures like us.
