Day 1 of 10

How Jesus Faced Temptation

Matthew · Chapter 4

Today's Reading

Matthew, Chapter 4

📖 Read Chapter

"Jesus answered, 'It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

— Matthew 4:4

Jesus did not fight temptation with willpower. He fought it with Scripture. Three times the devil attacked and three times Jesus answered 'It is written.' This is not a coincidence — it is a model. The Word of God, hidden in the heart, spoken in the moment, is the weapon that breaks temptation's power. Notice also the nature of the devil's attacks: each one targeted a legitimate need (hunger, security, authority) and offered a shortcut around God's way of meeting it. Temptation rarely asks you to want something evil. It asks you to meet a real need in a way that bypasses God. The antidote is not suppressing the need but trusting God's way of meeting it. Jesus was hungry and stayed hungry rather than sin. Trusting God's provision in the hunger was the victory, not the removal of the hunger.

Today's Prayer

Lord, hide Your Word in my heart so deeply that it comes to my lips before the temptation reaches my will. Teach me to fight like Jesus fought. Amen.
