Today's Reading
Matthew, Chapter 5
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
— Matthew 5:3
Jesus opens the Sermon with a list of blessings that are deliberately subversive. The poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, the persecuted — these are the ones Jesus calls blessed. Not powerful people, not successful people, not the religiously impressive. The Greek word makarios (blessed) could be translated 'to be congratulated' or 'deeply happy.' Jesus is congratulating people that the world pities. The reversal is the point. The Kingdom operates on different economic principles than the world. The poor in spirit — those who know they have no spiritual capital of their own, no righteousness to leverage — they are not disqualified from the Kingdom; they are at the front of the line. Empty hands are the hands that can receive. Full hands cannot. The whole Sermon builds on this foundation: to enter the Kingdom, you must first know you are empty.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I come empty-handed. Poor in spirit. Exactly where the Kingdom begins. Fill what I cannot fill myself. Amen.
