Matthew, Chapter 18

📖 Read Chapter

"Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.'"

— Matthew 18:22

Peter thought he was being generous with seven times. Jewish tradition required forgiveness three times; seven felt extravagant. Jesus answers with 77 — or in some translations, 490 times. Either way, the point is identical: stop counting. Forgiveness is not a quota system. It is not a finite resource that runs out after sufficient use. It is a posture of the heart, a way of being in relationship with people who will repeatedly fail you — just as you repeatedly fail God and receive His forgiveness again. The parable Jesus tells immediately after this exchange is the key: the servant who was forgiven a debt of millions but refused to forgive a debt of dollars. We are always the first servant in the story. What we have been forgiven makes any offense against us manageable. Forgiveness is not fair. Neither was the cross.

Today's Prayer

Lord, where I am keeping count, help me lose track. Where I have set a limit on my forgiveness, extend it. You have forgiven me beyond measure. Amen.
